I heard the phrase "God’s bloody knuckles" yesterday and it has intrigued me ever since. The phrase is clearly a nod to Revelation 3:20 (an often misapplied verse of Scripture because of its use in evangelism). Jesus is speaking to a group about being earnest in repentance. The reason? — "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline."

When the speaker said the phrase "God’s bloddy knuckles," it was like a flash. I instantly, clearly saw God’s bloody knuckles in my life. How many times a day does he try to communicate to me, to teach me? How many times does a lesson jump out at me? How many times have I payed attention? How many times have I forgotten? Is not my current life a result of ignoring God’s bloody knuckles?

I can’t find the direct quote by John Adams, but I heard something interesting via a Portable Professor called Patriots. He said that, to John Adams, the watchword of the Revolution was virtue and that it was not just about freedom. I’ve only read one biography of John Adams and have heard two lecture series in which he was mentioned, but that sounds like something John would say. He did say: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” I take that to mean the leaders presumed that the people would conduct themselves on a higher plane than previous civilizations. They certainly didn’t have the insane amount of laws as we do! They presumed personal responsiblity was the order of the day.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
       my hope comes from him. (Psalm 62:5)

Yes, soul, be at rest and stop hoping in all the stuff you’ve been hoping for.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
       will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1)

J, dwell in God’s shelter and you will find rest. Dwell in God’s word and rest.

The LORD protects the simplehearted;
       when I was in great need, he saved me.

 Be at rest once more, O my soul,
       for the LORD has been good to you.

 For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,
       my eyes from tears,
       my feet from stumbling, (Psalm 116:6-8)

Soul, God has been innumerably, immeasurably kind to you. Why won’t you be at rest?

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10)

God, I just can’t understand why you bother.

"When I consider your heavens,
       the work of your fingers,
       the moon and the stars,
       which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,
       the son of man that you care for him?

You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
       and crowned him with glory and honor."
(Psalm 8:3-5)
