C-Day plus 70

My wife unsynched the Christmas songs from our ipod (my personal playlist was not affected and I still have four Christmas songs). Another sign Christmas is over.

I am starting to realize that one of the things that makes Christmas feel different from the rest of the year are the times of quiet. I was blessed to have those times during Christmas, but not since. I really have to make a determined effort to have a string of quiet moments put together. Then maybe I can focus on Christmas during the year. Of course, I doubt Mary and Joseph had many quiet times during their ordeal.

The Power of 3

If I were a mystic, today would have been a mystical day. I’ll start with the lighthearted stuff. Saw three black racers, touched one. Saw three sandhill cranes around my car. My epistle reading today was Colossians 3. Told you it was weird.

Now, on to the good stuff. This morning, I took control of my mind away from God. I was thinking of "Grumpy Old Guy" again (aka – Frank Faultfinder; Henry Hindsight). Even when he doesn’t say or do ugly things, nor is even around, I still let him control my thoughts, emotions and attitudes. I began to say to myself over and over, "Set your mind on things above," etc. I even tried to think through how I could best do a sermon series wherein I do a reader’s digest tour of each book of the Bible. I could barely hold one minute of dedicated thought to God. I kept catching myself drifting away mentally. Then, I go to lunch and my epistle reading for the day was Colossians 3!!! Unreal! Below is the text in full. It is amazing how many places in this passage hit me exactly where I was at today and where I am on a regular basis. I have put in bold those items which are most related to my shortcomings at work.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
